Cape Disappointment Lighthouse

Cape Disappointment Lighthouse

Here is the Cape Disappointment Lighthouse without my car in front! This one is tough to get an interesting foreground and not lose the lighthouse in the distance! I could zoom in for a closer shot, but then all of the wonderful driftwood would not be included!

Cape Disappointment is located at the mouth of the Columbia River. The hills that you see off in the far distance are in Oregon. This lighthouse marks the entrance to the Columbia River and one of the most dangerous river bars in the world. This spot is collectively called the "Graveyard of the Pacific" due to the number of ships that have foundered here. This also is the only lighthouse in the state of Washington that has a day mark painted on it, the black band towards the top of the structure. Because of it's height on the cliff, the lighthouse blended in with the fog and background, so the Lighthouse Board painted the black band on it to provide a reference point for the mariners.

This is a pseudo-HDR as it is one image copied and turned into three different exposures. Capturing waves without ghosting in HDR is just about impossible. So I combined the three exposures, changed in my computer, merged in Photomatix and finally learned how to use the Unsharp Mask in Photoshop! Some adjustments in Lightroom 2 and a little vignetting.

This will be my last post for at least a couple of days as I am driving to Salt Lake City today to visit my sister, nieces and nephews! Hopefully I can post a few nice flower shots from the LDS Temple and some sunset shots from the Wasatch! Thanks for the views, comments and faves. Have a great Sunday.

Port Bickerton Lighthouse - Bickerton was settled in 1840 by a group of fishermen from Peggy's Cove. Although Bickerton Island was settled first, the area surrounding the lighthouse was settled soon afterwards. Port Bickerton, Nova Scotia, Canada

It was not until 1901 that the first of three lighthouses was constructed in Port Bickerton. Emery Taylor of Stillwater, N.S. was contracted to build the lighthouse with a bid of only five hundred dollars.

As the years passed, it was clear that the lighthouse was not a sturdy building and in about 1924 it was replaced, probably by a temporary light. In 1930 the light was first shown from the combined light and dwelling which still remains on the station. (This building is now the Nova Scotia Lighthouse Interpretive Centre and is open to the public.)
